2025 - A breakthrough year for Salmon and the River Teign
Voting to not kill line caught Atlantic salmon in the River Teign marks a pivotal moment in the history of our long-standing fishing associations and reflects a united commitment to sustainable conservation and angling practices. Successful votes were cast at both the Lower (LTFA) and Upper (UTFA) fishing association AGMs recently, and our thanks go out to the respective Chairmen for presenting and guiding the rule amendments home.
Atlantic salmon are not merely a species; they represent the vitality of our aquatic ecosystem and, albeit in alarmingly low numbers, still run and spawn in the River Teign.

The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is currently classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List, reflecting the critical state of its populations across various habitats. Once abundant in rivers throughout the South West and Devon especially, this species has seen significant declines due to overfishing, habitat degradation, and climate change impacts.
By choosing to prohibit the killing of these magnificent fish, we underscore our dedication to preserving this species for future generations.

This decision not only aligns with ecological best practices but also strengthens the bonds within the angling community, fostering a culture of stewardship throughout the River Teign and its two long-standing fishing associations.
Moreover, this milestone sets a precedent for ethical fishing practices and the responsible management of our natural resources. It signals to our partners, volunteers, and community members that our river supports fishing associations that are committed to balancing the joys of angling with the imperative of conservation. By prioritising the protection of Atlantic salmon, we enhance their habitat, support migratory patterns, and contribute to the overall biodiversity of the river.
In an era where environmental challenges are increasingly pressing, these votes serve as a powerful testament to our collective resolve to safeguard the river's future. It is an assertion that we are determined to ensure that both the fish and our angling traditions continue to thrive.
This milestone is not merely a point of decision; it is a clarion call for conservation, responsibility, and respect for the natural world we cherish.
Thank you to everyone involved!
