Sydney Buxton - Was he a time traveller?
I recently stumbled upon a book by the late Sydney Buxton as recommended by a friend. Simply titled ‘Fishing and Shooting’ and first published way back in 1902 a couple of pages stood out and got me thinking… Could this man see into the future!?
In these two pages, his text highlights a pressing issue identified through his own observations whilst fishing. Thankfully, I would like to think that more people are aware of wholesome water as a precious resource and that our Utility providers echo, support and invest in this notion.
As I reflect on Sydney Buxton’s words, it is evident that the challenges he faced over a century ago resonate just as powerfully today. However, this text should serve as a reminder that the protection and improvement of our rivers are not only the responsibility of a few but a shared endeavour that requires the dedication of an entire community and all stakeholders for the benefit of future generations.
It’s funny that over a century later and with all the advancements in technology, it’s still eyes on the river that act as the frontline to highlighting and raising any potential issues. Sydney, I tip my hat to your forward-thinking, or, were you just able to Time Travel…? Who knows!
